AI Optimists believe artificial intelligence can and should be used to create a free and fair future for all sentient beings.

• Freedom: We strive for a future in which AI is distributed broadly and equitably, where each person is empowered by AIs working for them, under their own control. To this end, we support the open-source AI community, and we oppose attempts to centralize AI research in the hands of a small number of corporations in the name of “safety.”
• Fairness: We are excited about the new technologies that AI will enable in the coming decades. But we also strongly believe that these technologies should be thoroughly optional. No one should feel forced to change their way of life in the future due to social pressure, competition, or legal mandate.
• Future: We’re deeply optimistic about the future, and we oppose attempts to halt or pause technological progress.

The movement was founded in late 2023 by machine learning researchers Nora Belrose and Quintin Pope.
